SYNOPSIS:
Leah’s always seen the shadow creatures. She thought she was immune to their evil—until now.

She’s walked into a massacre, stolen a BMW, and is running from the law for a crime she didn’t commit. Nineteen-year-old Leah’s life just went from mildly abnormal to totally crazy at lightning speed. But no one will believe that the shadow creatures are framing her for the murder, because she’s the only one that can see them. At least that’s what she thought.

When Leah stumbled across a group who share her ability, she discovers they have something she doesn’t: a way to fight back. When the group offers to teach her how to kill the shadow creatures, Leah jumps at the chance. But something is brewing with the creatures. They’re tracking down the hunters like there’s no tomorrow. Leah suspects that maybe there won’t be, and it’s up to her to make sure tomorrow comes. Because she’ll do anything to stop the shadows, including risking her life—and the life of the one she loves—to keep the world from being lost to darkness forever.

MY THOUGHTS:
You know a story's going to be crazy when it starts with the main characters entire family being murdered. An absence of light opened with a bang, and the whole book was just a roller coaster of twists and turns, some which I guessed and some which I didn't. The plot is dark and original, and I was completely intrigued to find out what was really going on with the shadows and how the characters were going to defeat them. There were times when the story slowed down and I felt as though some conversations were repeated multiple times even though we'd been through the information already, but overall I thought the storyline was very interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat for the majority of the book.

Meradeth Houston's writing was decent, although I sometimes I thought the tone seemed a little bit light for what was happening in the story. There was some very disturbing imagery and creepy descriptions throughout this book that I thought were very well done, but this was occasionally ruined by the cheesy metaphors and similes that were scattered through the novel. I do generally like her writing style, however, and I'd be very interested to read more books from this author in the future.

The characters were definitely one of the strongest points of this novel. Leah is a badass, and even though she went through some really, really horrible things I loved that she was always dedicated to fighting the shadows and saving people she loved. Aside from that she had real human emotions and realistic reactions to things that happened to her which made her a lot more relatable. As far as female protagonists go, Leah is one of the best characters I've read about for a while. I also enjoyed reading about both the guys she ended up teaming up with, and I ended up being very connected to both of them. There were other side characters who I found to be interesting and unique, and overall the characters were a bit hit for me in this book!

I liked that this book wasn't afraid to go in directions I wasn't necessarily expecting, and it turned some things I thought about the world and the story completely on it's head.

IN CONCLUSION:
An absence of light was a dark and intriguing story, with characters I really ended up caring about. I had a couple of issues with the writing style and pacing but overall I really enjoyed this book!
